Soltanto col D.M. 14 ottobre 1879, n. 5128 è regolamentato l'esame sulle due letterature classiche e sulla letteratura italiana previsto dal R.D. 28 ottobre 1875, n. 2760 per gli studenti della sezione fisico-matematica dell'Istituto tecnico che aspirassero, dopo il primo biennio della Facoltà, a conseguire la laurea in matematica, in fisica e in chimica ed in scienze naturali. Risulta che i primi studenti sottoposti a quest'obbligo siano stati gli immatricolati del 1880-81.
